Description

'''My Master, Illuminated'. Upon the completion of another successful investigation in London, Alois returns home to find its residents.... different. Sufficed to say, whoever said all miracles are divine in origin.....''

Yes, I've finally given myself full name credit. Why the change? My graduation and efforts to move into the professional field just made it feel ideal. Anyway, onto the episode itself. Luka, I find, is one of the more interesting yet also least utilized aspects of the original series. The idea of a small, naive child who basically commits genocide for the sake of love, it's just beautifully morbid and fits perfectly with the whole 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions' that is one of the running themes of both versions of BB2. However, despite the scale of what he does, the original series never seemed interested in really bringing him more to the forefront, or even really dealing with the full weight of essentially being the one who sets Alois on the dark road to the Trancy household. As cute as they are together, if Alois realised what Luka had done, I very much doubt he would be so warm and happy to see him, 'long lost' or not.

On top of that, I've actively pushed Hannah to have a larger and more transparent role compared to the original series, where she was mostly a background character until really the last three or four episodes where she suddenly becomes this grand puppet master, manipulating everyone. I very much wanted to bring the maternal aspect to the fore more, not only to contrast with Claude's colder, more businesslike attitude, but also to put that more manipulative angle into better context: she's not doing this out of any kind of sick pleasure, but out of feeling like this is what's best for the boys. Other decisions then bled out from that: eschewing the latex-dominatrix outfit for the dress as I felt it was just too overt, fan-servicey and didn't add much to her character, instead going for sort of a dark Mary Poppins/nanny look, or her own past. I wanted to show why she had become so disillusioned with man, and why someone like Luka would be such a surprise for her instead of just having narration spout that with no proper context. It also allows me to tie the series even closer together.

What's handy about having another entity to build off of is the ability to pick and choose elements that did work, and working them into your own narrative. Here we have the likes of bluebells, Hannah's abode, the swing scene and the asylum, repurposed here for Alois' treatment instead of Ciel's soul fusion. Victoriana Gothic just loves a good nuthouse or sanatorium, filled with bizarre inventions, 'cures' and doctors who or may not be as loopy as their patients. Speaking of the odd side of the Victorians, both literature and their actual history indicates a fascination with the mystique of foreign cultures and lost civilizations, even setting up secret societies and cults based around old religions. Here, I decided to go with the Aztecs, a faith whose infamous bloodlust felt a good fit for a secret brotherhood, complete with underground lair and human sacrifice. Plus, it also gave me the excuse to have a punchline with their defeat before we got to the meat of this more serious episode. Funnily enough though, that wasn't the first choice, as a killer werewolf, mummy, dragon and sandman were also considered for the opening bit.

And yes, 'Suo Gan' is the same lullaby that Hannah sings in the original show, a Welsh song about a mother comforting her child. The lyrics here are just the first stanza of the lullaby, and one of several English translations is as follows (courtesy of DA user numina-namine):
Sleep my baby, at my breast,
’Tis a mother’s arms round you.
Make yourself a snug, warm nest.
Feel my love forever new.
Harm will not meet you in sleep,
Hurt will always pass you by.
Child beloved, always you’ll keep,
In sleep gentle, mother’s breast nigh.

The Tarot card: The Sun deals with revelations and new knowledge.

By the by, if you want an idea of how an older Luka might look like, lo and behold someone actually drew it more or less as I had envisioned. Gotta love happy accidents: nanabbi.deviantart.com/art/pic…

---- NEXT EPISODE -----
Luka just wants Alois to be happy, and Hannah is determined to implement this at any and all costs. What is Claude scheming, and just how far can an already broken boy be pushed?
Next time on Trancy´s Tale: My Master, Inadequate. For you see, this is simply one hell of a series.

I'm so glad Hannah's character is expanded upon. I was surprised at Alois' reaction but upon reflection, that is most likely how he would react.

I'd quite forgotten that Hannah had been the mastermind in BB2, and it didn't seem as if she would be capable of besting Claude. Although she did have help from the triplets this time around.

It's much more interesting that Hannah is going to try and brainwash Alois into being happy (of course that is not true happiness), and Claude definitely cannot stand for Alois being happy anyway. I think Alois' happiness would have simply meant a life with Luka, but now that Alois is tainted, it is probably no longer achievable in Alois' eyes. (Since Luka being dead was probably Alois' drive/motivation to continue living and to become one of the wealthy).
