Black Butler II: Trancy's Tale - Episode 4

Description

'''My Master, Impudent'. Why has the Mary Celeste returned from her watery graves, and what is her role in the disappearance of trading ships in the Atlantic?''

So, time for the trivia: The Mary Celeste remains one of the great maritime mysteries, and just about every theory under the sun has surfaced: from mutiny, a false alarm and pirates, to aliens and sea monsters. If you can think of it, someone has proposed it, in part popularized by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's (the creator of Sherlock Holmes) writing a short piece that has often been wrongly cited as a factual account, 'J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement', in 1884.

And speaking of authors, this episode is very much a love letter to one of my big influences, Jules Verne. The high faring adventures, the fantastical machines and even Hamal himself are nods to mainly two Verne stories: 'Robur The Conqueror' (which also dealt with a sky pirate and his flying machine) and '20, 000 Leagues Under The Sea' (strange nautical attacks and of course, Nemo, who is revealed as Indian in the sequel 'The Mysterious Island'). His works have been a huge part of my development as both creative mind and genre junkie ever since I watched the 'Around The World' cartoon from the 80s as a child.

Also Uranium was discovered all the way back in 1789 by a German chemist, though 'radioactivity' as a concept was first popularized in 1896, a good six years after this story is set. However, artistic license aside, a man who built an airship, a flying fortress and bulletproof metal is probably not entirely unable to make another important scientific discovery early, now is he?

Also, the ending. I won't say anything for now, but the choice of setting may or may not come into play later. Spoilers...

The Tarot card: the card is The Hanged Man, which deals with sudden changes and new perspectives. I think the reasoning should be pretty clear here.

---- NEXT EPISODE -----
The One Year anniversary of Alois' ascension to the Trancy mantle is approaching, and so a costume ball will be thrown. While Alois and Claude are away to iron out some final details, what will the rest of the servants get up to? Just who or what are the purple haired Triplets?
Next time on Trancy´s Tale: My Master, Indivisible. For you see, this is simply one hell of a series.

Oh my gosh, I've only read maybe 3 of Jules Vernes' works. I must admit this episode was over rather quickly, probably just because it had a filler-type feel to it. It was still good though. I can really tell all the research that has gone into this series and I really admire your dedication.

BUT THE ENDING reminds me that I still need to watch Sweeney Todd.
