Was Blu-ray a letdown? by SavageScribe Was Blu-ray a letdown? by SavageScribe

Was the jump to a higher definition format really all it was cracked up to be, and where exactly did the cracks start to show?

I think Blu-Ray didn't bring enough new features to the table to make non-videophiles rush to adopt it. Aside from picture quality the larger storage capacity never opened the door for new, more engaging special features that really gripped people.

Another minor gripe I have with Blu-Ray is the load times. Put a VHS, DVD, or digital file and it's up almost instantly. Blu-Rays can sometimes take a few minutes to lad (depending on publisher) or even require a software update! Not great when you just want to pop in a movie and go.

All and all I love the digital restorations and high-picture quality brought by Blu-Ray, but feel the publishers dropped the ball on making it a true successor to DVD. It really is just DVD 2.0 (or, dare I say it: An HD DVD) rather than an entirely new, groundbreaking format.

Not really... It was brilliant. :)
I just hate the DRM so jst download everything I buy so I can play it on my phone offline.

They should have allowed you to rip the movie in MP4 format for portable devices.

You can copy a CD to MP3 for personal use. Why not a movie. lol

Which kind of goes back to my point about how lax the expansion/experimentation of the Blu-Ray media and its capabilities was.

I see your point. HD DVD and DVD had the same issues though. DRM made it useless unless you have a laptop. We all know what laptops do when playing DVD.... Run out of battery half way through the movie. Fuck that shit.
