Was Joe Wright's 2015 prequel to J.M Barrie's classic as bad as its dismal critical and commercial reception would lead you to believe? Mmm, maybe not...

So, not a piece of the length of my very popular 'Defending the Lone Ranger' trilogy from a few years back. Still, I'm a sucker for period fantasy-adventure tales, and always excited when Hollywood devotes its considerable resources to the subgenre. Shame it got mauled after test screenings, and losing Dario Marinelli as composer didn't help matters, either.

I'm afraid I just did not enjoy the film, mainly for the reasons above that you mentioned. The visuals were imaginative to say the least, but the film felt like a challenge to watch. Why would Blackbeard need to mine pixie dust to rejuvenate his youth, when he is in Neverland to begin with? Why was Hook so annoying? He had no trace of the future pirate and villain he would become. And I simply do not understand why they whitewashed the role of Tiger Lily. Even if Wright meant well, which I'm sure he did, it seems very wrong to cast Rooney Mara as a Native American character. Plus there is also the chosen one plot (urgh!), the film strangely set during WWII, and that cringeworthy dialogue at the end of the film where Peter and Hook proclaim they will be friends forever. That really wasn't subtle.

There was a problem with how indians was portrayed in Peter Pan and wanted to avoid stereo. Even if they did use a Native American actor it still wouldn't help the film. I'm really annoyed with this white washing nonsense because it is based a assumption.

I enjoyed it. No, it's not a perfect movie, but one I had fun with and proudly own. There's alot I like and alot I don't, but I can see both sides of those who either like or hate it.
